Plant Description
​​Bi Cheng Qie commonly known as Fructus Litseae is the ripe fruit of Litsea cubebaLour.)Pers., which is a deciduous shrub or tree belonging to the family Lauraceae. It is a relatively practical Vietnam & Chinese herbal medicine, .
There are about hundreds species of Litsea, which are distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of Vietnam & Sounthern of China. Some of them are common medicinal plants, such as Litsea cubeba (Lour.) Pers.
Litsea cubeba also called Aromatic litsea or May Chang is an important herb plant. They often wild grow in sunny mountainous areas, thickets, sparse forests or forest roadsides and waterfronts at altitudes of 500-3,200 meters. This small tropical tree native to Vietnam, wild grown in mountain area from north to the Sounth of Vietnam.

In the autumn, when the fruits of Litsea cubeba are ripe, people gather their fruits, remove impurities, dry them in the sun, and make them into Piper Cubeba Seed or Chinese herbal medicines.

Cubeba Piper Seed (Bi Cheng Qie) contains citral, α-pinene, β-pinene, myrcene, limonene, camphene, methyl heptenone, geraniol, limonene, p-cymene, ethyl acetate, linalool, citronellal, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, stearic acid, arachidic acid, rutin, tephrosin, β-sitosterol, daucosterol, flavonoids, amino acids, sugars, organic acids, lignans, and some trace elements. Generally, the plump and oily Bi Cheng Qie with a strong fragrance is preferred.

 

 

Piper Cubeba Seed Use:
Litsea Cubeba has been used as a food ingredient since very early times and is recorded in both Vietnamese and Chinese texts.
Vietnam & China medicine uses dried Litsea Cubeba for stomach problems such as stomach-ache, diarrhea, and nausea. The Chinese also use it to boost the heart and to help with mucus and phlegm.
Litsea Cubeba is used in the treatment of fractures, rheumatism, arthritis, bruising, carbuncles, nausea, hangovers, travel and sea sickness, colds and flu, catarrh, congestion, coughs, sinusitis, sores on the skin, sore throat, diarrhea, colic, cramps, chills and fever.
​According to the Vietnam & Chinese Pharmacopoeia, the medicinal nature of Bi Cheng Qie is relatively warm, with a pungent taste. It has a certain therapeutic effect on the pathological changes of the spleen, stomach, kidney, and bladder meridians.
In traditional Vietnam & Chinese medicine, it is often used to warm middle energizer and dispel cold, promote qi circulation and relieve pain, and treat cold pain in the stomach and abdomen, vomiting, hiccup, periumbilical colic due to cold, turbid urine, difficult urination, fever, phlegm, asthma, cough, toothache, chronic bronchitis, cerebral thrombosis, and coronary artery disease.
